S.T.E.A.M Spartans. S.T.E.A.M stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Athletics and Mathematics. We are a group of eighth grade students from Christa McAuliffe school located in Jersey City, NJ. Tiana, Ayah, Soraya, and Yvelisse are the four members of the group.
Our goal is to create S.T.E.A.M based activities in nature to encourage children to be physically healthy. Our main course resides in the first ever Phragmite maze that was created by one of Project Reservoir's alumni group known as PHRAG Attack. In the past year, they have accomplished to clear out an entire phragmite field in our local Reservoir #3 to open it up to the community. We will be utilizing the maze and will continue to expand it to clear out space for people. All of the members in the Spartans team are athletic and have a passion for preserving nature. We wanted to combine our love for both. We came up with our team focus because we all thought that if we combined two everyday things that we enjoy (science and athletics), we would be successful in connecting our community to nature and science, while keeping their heart healthy!
We are utilizing the unique opportunity of exposing city kids like us to the hidden oasis of the reservoir, creating our obstacles around it while trying to improve the health of our participants by exposing them to first hand knowledge of staying active, eating healthy and learning basic information like your heart rate, how it works, and why it's so important.
